Greater Nepal - a documentary film released

Greater Nepal is a cinematic exploration of the identity of a nation and its people through the eyes of an insider. The film is by Manoj Pandit and was released at Jai Nepal Cinema on Tuesday

Greater Nepal argues that the territories seized by the East India Company in the Treaty of Sugauli, lawfully belongs to Nepal. In 1950, Nepal and Great Britain signed a Friendship Treaty in which it has been categorically mentioned that all treaties signed hitherto between the two countries has been annulled by this treaty. Thus, by this provision in the treaty, the treaty of Sugauli has also been annulled. It claims the lost land should be rightfully returned to Nepal.

The film also documents and raises the issue of deliberate border encroachment by India in several parts of Nepal , particularly in Kalapani, Susta, Pyaratal, Bhadrapur and Kakarbhitta.

83 Countries Invited to Submit Foreign Language Films for 2006 Oscar®

Beverly Hills, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today invited 83 countries to submit films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 79th Academy Awards®.

To qualify for the 2006 awards year, a film must be released in the submitting country between October 1, 2005 and September 30, 2006 and be publicly screened in 35mm or 70mm film for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial motion picture theater.

The dialogue track must be predominantly in a language or languages other than English. Accurate English subtitles are required.

Entry forms must be received at the Academy by Monday, October 2, 2006, and film prints must be received by Friday, October 13. Only one picture will be accepted from each country.

Documentary Film Entries Due September 1 for 2006 Oscars®

Beverly Hills, CA — Friday, September 1, is the deadline for documentary filmmakers to submit their short subject and feature-length documentaries to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 79th Academy Awards®.

Each entry form must be accompanied by supporting materials including an English-language synopsis of the film, a list of film credits, filmographies of the director(s) and/or producer(s), 25 VHS cassette tapes or 25 DVDs of the film, and proof of a seven-day qualifying exhibition in either Los Angeles County or the Borough of Manhattan in New York.

Videotapes or DVDs will be distributed to members of the Academy’s Documentary Branch who will determine the nominees for both the short subject and feature-length categories.

The 79th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at 5:30 a.m. PST in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Nepali Films at Tokyo Film Festival

Two filmmakers from Nepal are set to leave for Japan to participate in the Himalayan Film Festival in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled to be held at the NHK Fureai Hall from August 14-22.

Sixteen films from the Himalaya Archief Nederland were selected for the festival out of which seven Nepali filmmakers' six works will be screened.
